Mounting a BlackBerry as a storage device on a Mac computer enables you to bypass the BlackBerry desktop software and still transfer files between the phone and the computer. If you're unable to mount your phone as a drive, settings on the BlackBerry or SD card problems could be the cause. If you can't fix the problem, solutions like the desktop software, Bluetooth and cloud services provide other file-transfer options.
Mass Storage Mode
Mass storage mode must be on to connect a BlackBerry to your Mac. If it isn't enabled in settings, the phone can't mount as a drive when it's connected to the computer. Connect the BlackBerry to the Mac before enabling mass storage mode. Click 'Media Card' and then turn on 'Mass Storage Mode Support.' Press 'Menu' and then click 'Enable USB Mass Storage' to mount the phone.
Software Problems
Software problems in the BlackBerry may be responsible for the Mac not recognizing the phone as a drive. Check the product ID to see the error codes. Click the 'Apple' menu and then click 'About this Mac' and 'More Info.' Expand the 'Hardware' option in the Content pane and click 'USB.' Expand the 'USB Bus' branches on the USB Device Tree until you find an entry marked 'BlackBerry Smartphone' or 'RIM Composite Device.' Click the entry to see information about the device, including the PID. If the PID is 0x0001 or 0x8001, then a problem with the BlackBerry is the issue. Pull the battery from the phone while it's still on; wait 30 seconds and then insert it back into the phone. Power the BlackBerry on and wait for the software to load before connecting it to the Mac again.
Storage Card
If you have a media card in your BlackBerry, it should be clean and properly inserted. Remove the micro SD card from the BlackBerry and look at the contacts to see if they're dirty. If the contacts are dirty, clean them with an SD card cleaning kit or simply a lint-free cloth. Push the micro SD card back into the BlackBerry until it's firmly in place.
Transfer Options
If the BlackBerry and Mac both support Bluetooth, you can transfer files between the two devices without mounting the BlackBerry. Apps like Dropbox, SkyDrive and Google Drive can also assist in transferring items between your computer and your BlackBerry. You can attach text files to email messages and send them between email accounts to be accessed on either device. The BlackBerry Desktop Software is designed to transfer files between the Mac and the BlackBerry. It can transfer most of the same types of files that you can transfer when the BlackBerry is acting as a drive on the Mac.
